Description

The ceremony is performed with an objective to “quicken a male child” in the woman in the second, third and the fourth month of pregnancy. The Punsavana is performed on the  day of male Nakshatra. According to Susruta, the great Ayurvedic writer, the juice of the Banyan tree relieves trouble during pregnancy. During this ritual, a pregnant lady puts a few drops of the juice of the Banyan stem into her right nostril and inhale it and prays god to bless her with a son or a worthy child.

Sanctified thread is tied to the left wrist of the lady. Mantras are recited to invoke various deities and seek their blessings. For instance, God Isana is requested to fulfill all the wishes. As Dhata blesses the world with children and wealth, he is requested to bless the household with children as well. Likewise Lord Agni and Indra are also worshiped separately through mantras to bless the households.

The husband is supposed to pronounce a Mantra from the Yajurveda placing his hand on the womb of his pregnant wife. Through the mantra, he basically urges all the gods to bless the soul in the womb with all the good attributes. Various deities including Gayatri, Agni and Indra are requested to endue the child with all the positive attributes.

After this the pregnant lady should live in a disciplined way and lead a life with confined movements and with proper (restricted) diets. She should eat a small quantity of the Brahmi herb, cocculus cordiclius (giloy) and dry ginger (Soonth) with milk. She should avoid too much sleep and talking. Similarly it is also recommended to avoid sour, bitter things, pungent, saltish food preparations and purgatives like Termunallia Chebula (Haritaki). She should completely cast aside greed, anger, aversion etc. and always keep her mind happy and joyful. She should lead a life of good conduct.
