Ganesh Chaturthi is a pious festival that brings people of all faiths and religion under one roof. It is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm by the Hindus and they worship the idol of Lord Ganesh in a special way. Based on the family tradition or commitment, idol of Lord Ganpati is kept for a day and half or for 5, 7 or 11days.

On the last day of worship, the idol is taken out in procession with pomp and show and immersed traditionally (Visarjan) in flowing water which is sea, or river or even a pond or lake. The unbridled enthusiasm of people is apparently visible in the procession which is colorful and musical.

Why is Ganesh Chaturthi(Ganesh Puja) Celebrated?

Ganesh Chaturthi(ganesh puja) is celebrated on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapad which usually falls between August and September. It is believed that Lord Ganesh descends on earth on this auspicious day to shower his blessings on the devotees. Devotees believe that anybody who approaches the benevolent God with clean heart receives his blessings. He is known to remove all obstacles, giver of fortune ‘Sukh-Karta’ as well as helps to stave off natural calamities.

Things Needed for Ganesh Puja (Ganesh Chaturthi)

Here are the things which you will need for Ganesh Puja.

  • An idol of Lord Ganesh
  • Red flowers, preferably Hibiscus flowers
  • Chandan or sandalwood paste
  • Durva grass
  • Incense sticks
  • A Chaurang or elevated table to place the idol
  • Modaks or any sweets
  • Some fruits
  • Diya to light in front of the idol for Aarti
  • A cloth to cover the table and things to decorate it like lights
