Chapter 13 of the Chandi Path talks about the origin of the  Sahasra Chandi Homam.It narrates the tale of the businessman Samadhi and a king Surath who worshiped the Goddess for three years after receiving instructions from a  sage Medhas. Pleased by their deep penance, Goddess appeared before them in perceivable form to grant them boon. Varah Tantra, an authoritative tantric text further proclaims the benefits of worshiping the powerful deity. It asserts that “Sahasra Chandi yagya” helps a person attain ultimate wisdom and liberation.

The scripture Saptashati extend 700 slokas divided into 3 episodes covering 13 chapters dealing with 3 incarnation of mother. Chandipath is recognized as a great Sadhana Sasthra and a jewel of sruthis which has to be recited with great discipline and devotion in the way our tradition has prescribed.

The Kathyayani Tantra mentions the following benefits of reading Devi Mahatmayam

  • Three times – to get rid of effects of black magic
  • Five times – to get rid of malefic effects of planets
  • Seven times – to do away with great fears
  • Nine times – attains peace
  • Eleven times – to conquer fear of death, avoid wrath of king
  • Twelve times – desires fulfillment, destruction of enemies
  • Fourteen times – to attract women as well as destroy enemies
  • Fifteen times – to garner abundant wealth and pleasures in life
  • Sixteen times – to get sons and grandsons
  • Seventeen times – to overcome the fears of the highest post official
  • Eighteen times – to attain occult powers
  • Twenty times – for putting war to an end
  • Twenty-five times – to become liberated from the prison
  • Hundred times – to get rid of banishment from the caste, great sorrow, loss of life, and attain salvation
  • Hundred and eight times – fulfillment of any desire

One thousand times – Mahalakshmi is said to visit the worshiper and attainment of abundant weal

Widely known as DeviMahatmayam (Glory of Divine Mother), this cosmic hymen is presented to the world in dialogue form – conversation between Markandeye and kroshtuki in Markandeye Puranam. The Maharshi himself did not author the book but it has simply originated from time immemorial and has been handed over to successive generation.

Sapthasathi explains why it is so important to worship the Supreme Sakthi who has created even gods and goddesses. It has also been described in the tantra that “Sakthi” is the origin and source of all known and unknown powers.
